Be Brilliant is the first words you see when unwrapping the Thud juggling kit. I must admit, that my initial feeling was that for somebody like myself - unco-ordinated, clumsy (good looking it has to be said)!! with minimal ball to hand skills - would be far from brilliant when learning to juggle. However, when following the easy instructions in the uncannily entitled booklet A short course in life enhancement I found that after what seemed like hours (and was probably more like days!) John Jaques Staunton Chess Pieces were born, and to quote from a famous book on early chess Throughout its history, nothing made such an impact on the design of chessmen as the introduction of the English Staunton Chess Pieces. Simple symbols were used for each piece, a crown for the king, a coronet for the queen, a mitre for the bishop and a castle for the rock. The horses head for the knight was taken from marble sculpture on the Parthenon in Athens and the pawn was based on the Freemasons Square and Compasses. The set was launched in late 1847 with quite a fervour having an entire front page column of the Morning Herald dedicated to it. With this free press and superlative design success was virtually guaranteed and within 10 years nearly all important chess games were played with Staunton Chessmen, which is still the case today. Staunton Chess Sets have been produced continually by John Jaques from 1847 up to the present day, except during wartime. Production ceased on ivory sets in the early 1930s, but Boxwood sets continued right up to the outbreak of the war. After the war it was almost impossible to obtain ivory or ebony, but production recommenced using Boxwood only and black staining and black polishing for the black pieces. This brings us to the original Staunton pieces produced today by Jaques. These are made in exactly the same materials and to the same specification as the original Boxwood and Ebony sets and they are polished by hand, with no lacquering being used. This brings on the natural colour and feel of the wood. The craftsmanship of this 4 set matches that of the larger Jaques sets and exhibits the same exquisite design. Constructed from Stunning Black American Walnut laminate, the table has a sleek black finish which would sit equally splendidly in a designer bachelor pad or a funky wine bar bistro. This look is further enhanced with the solid aluminium handles on brushed steel tubular bars which have easy glide bearings. This premium look is nicely finished off with aluminium scorer, solid metal ball feed and return and solid metal feet. Board games usually fall into one of two categories - they either look superb but have the playability of a damp squib or look pretty dreary but are actually great fun. Thankfully, Cirondo happens to to tick the box in both categories in that it is a sleek looking game which will look at home in any designer pad and has the playability of all the modern greats, from Monopoly to Totopoly. Cirondo is a fun, absorbing and challenging game of attack, defence and sacrifice which unlocks a world of strategic choices with endless playing variations that will keep you entertained for hours. It combines the strategic nature of Chess with the simplicity of draughts/checkers. Two or four player battles for galactic domination are resolved on a unique round board, with quality metal pieces advancing or defending in arcs and circular movements adding a new dimension to traditional board gameplay. The object of the Game is to conquer the galaxy by eliminating your opponent from the board. This can be achieved by a vast array of strategies using your Moons, Planets and Solar Systems (known as Stellars) to skilfully attack opponents. Each player starts with an equal number of moons and planets (16 of each for a 2 player game and 8 of each for a 4 player game). Planets can move in arcs around the board, use this to your advantage to attack and outsmart your opponent whilst remembering to protect your Moons. When your Moons reach the inner orbit they are exchanged for the most powerful stellar - a Solar System. This is the most destructive stellar as it can move in any direction on the board to eliminate your opponent(s)! When a player lands his stellar on an opponents stellar the opponents stellar is is eliminated and removed from the board. The ultimate winner is the player who eliminates all of their opponents stellar, or in the rare event of a tie has the most powerful stellar remaining on the board. Cirondo is a strategic board game suitable for all the family and is sure to provide hours of entertainment.
